Fonepay and NPCI International Payments have reached an impressive milestone with over 1 million UPI transactions completed in Nepal. This achievement follows the partnership formed in February 2024 between Nepal’s leading payment network - Fonepay, and NIPL, the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The collaboration was established with a shared vision of enabling seamless and secure cross-border payment solutions between India and Nepal. Under this arrangement, Indian consumers visiting Nepal can make instant QR-based person-to-merchant UPI payments using any UPI-enabled mobile application.
Since the integration, the impact has been remarkable. More than 1 million transactions have been completed, with total payment volume exceeding NPR 2 billion. Today, over 100,000 Fonepay merchants across all 77 districts of Nepal accept UPI payments. The service has been especially popular in key districts like Kathmandu, Kaski, and Kailali so far, with strong adoption in the retail, hospitality, and tourism sectors.
Reflecting on the milestone, Diwas Kumar, CEO of Fonepay, shared, “Crossing one million UPI transactions highlights the growing trust Indian consumers have in digital payments in Nepal. It reflects their confidence in using Fonepay’s network and reinforces our shared vision of a connected digital economy in the region.”
This collaboration between Fonepay and NPCI International showcases how regional cooperation can make digital transactions more accessible, inclusive, and secure.
